Two interesting bits.

The guy who masterminded the murder of Bishop Gerardi in 1998 was released from prison a couple days ago after serving less than half of his 20 year sentence. Days before his murder, Bishop Gerardi had released a report on behalf of the Catholic church saying that the military was behind most of the killings during this time (the 36 year civil war). HERE is the article if you are interested. There are lots of examples of injustice and impunity in Guatemala, but two that are ongoing are crimes against women and justice for victims of the civil war. Only in 2009 was the first person sentenced for their crimes during the war. And politicos that were instrumental in what is considered a genocide of the Mayan people during the war are still active in government.
