Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Muy obvio. Muy feo.

It's so weird to me when things are so obvious. Like obviously good (cake) and obviously bad (this article). The Canadian mining company GoldCorp just does not want to consult the people about their mine. Just these first few paragraphs are incredible! I realize many issues are complicated, but I can't see the complexity here. The community where this GoldCorp mine exists was not consulted (violation of the International Labor Organization - ILO - Convention 169 about consultation of indigenous people and ancestral land), and now social, health, and economic consequences are being widely and consistently documented... This was published today in Canadian news.

  • 90% of GoldCorp shareholders reject better consultation of native groups and ignore the fact that the community does not want the mine.

TORONTO - Goldcorp Inc. shareholders have soundly rejected a call for the Vancouver miner to shut down a big mine in Central America amid pressure from critics who say the project is making people sick and hurting the environment.

Ninety per cent of shareholders who sent in their votes before Goldcorp's annual meeting in Toronto on Wednesday defeated a resolution that called on the company to better consult native groups near the Marlin mine in western Guatemala, about 300 kilometres northwest of the country's capital city.

The resolution also said the company should shut down its mining operations not approved by local residents.

The rest here.
