Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

To the country and back.

Ok so I had fun today. Fine. We went out to a community about 45 minutes out of Xela to visit an NGO that is pretty cool. The best part was our talk with a local midwife who rocked. my. world. She delivered 3 of her own kids by herself. Why? Because. No one else was around. Luckily the local dude facilitating our visit was able to gesture what that must have been like, in case there was any doubt. I was super stoked to sit next to her, Esperanza, and ask her loads of questions even though my students were quite fidgety. Her whole chat was giving me the creeps though, all the rural home birth talk and whatnot had me in knots. Yikes. But danggg are women cool. Then we spent the rest of the afternoon exploring Xela in small groups. I had great coffee, tofu, bought stuff, and talked to people about things like where vegetables come from, how Guatemalan textiles are sometimes made in China now and sold back in Guate for lame-o tourists to buy, and the joys of vegan oatmeal cookies.
